Project Data
The St Lukes Health headquarters in Launceston is the largest mass timber building in Tasmania, setting a new benchmark for sustainable commercial construction. At 30 metres tall, seven storeys, and a total floor area of 7,685 square meters, this state-of-the-art building combines innovative design and cutting-edge construction techniques to create a visually striking and environmentally responsible office space.
Fairbrother’s expertise in mass timber construction was the driving force behind the flawless execution of this innovative design. The building features both glue-laminated timber (GLT) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) throughout its structure. The team played an active role in sourcing and coordinating international and local timber suppliers, this included obtaining custom timber products from XLAM in Victoria, CUSP in Wynyard, Tasmania, and HESS in Austria, which contributed to the successful completion of this ambitious project.
The team overcame significant challenges such as limited site space and complex material sourcing by implementing meticulous planning and coordination. They ensured that all mass timber elements were stored off-site and loaded onto trucks in the correct construction sequence to be assembled on-site. This approach minimised disruptions at the site and efficiently used the limited space available.
The mass timber component of the build progressed rapidly, with one floor completed every 10 days. This demonstrated to the community the efficiency of this construction method. Additionally, the use of prefabricated timber components not only sped up the construction process but also enhanced the overall quality and precision of the build.
Featuring a wellness hub, dental clinic, and café, St Lukes unifies the company’s employees in one modern space. Fairbrother’s leadership in sustainable construction set a new standard with this mass timber project, positioning it as a pioneer for future developments.
